Instructions and help for the Climate Distribution pages
- Purpose
The basic philosophy behind the pages is that while the mean (or average) climate is useful, it can also be useful to know what the full range of climate data has looked like in the past.
- Instructions
- Select your region. For gridded data, choose a lat/lon point or select a spot on the map. For climate division data, choose a state and a division. For now, you will need to look up what a numbered division for each state is. The maximum number of divisions in indicated by the state name. Or, you can choose the entire state.
- Choose a variable.
- Then choose a single month or a season defined by inpoutting the first and last month.
- Choose a year range. The distribution will be based on that range only.
- Choose an output type. Currently, you can
- Plot the distribution of the values for each year. This gives a good idea of the range, the range and the skewness (tilt) of the distribution.
- Plot the sorted values (low to high). This gives you a good idea of how the data is distributed and where terciles and so forth would fall.
- Print the values, by year
- Print the ranked values w/the corresponding year
- Find where a specified value would fall in the distribution. For example, the specified value could be a forecast value.
- Find where a given year falls in the distribution. The year can be in the range of years you choose or it can be outside.

You can use the plots produced from this page in publications. We ask that you acknowledge the Climate Diagnostics Center in the publication. For example, "Image provided by the NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Center, Boulder Colorado from their Web site at http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/".
You should also reference the dataset you are using.
